Golden Age of Bicycle Racing In New Jersey 4/27

The Golden Age of Bicycle Racing In New Jersey
by Michael C. Gabriele

Book-launch Reception

Cycling in New Jersey began in the 1880s, when colleges and communities formed some of the nation’s first cycling clubs, and the popularity of the sport quickly spread, with races held in Plainfield, Trenton and Asbury Park.

The region was also home to cycling’s golden era of velodromes, built in Newark and Nutley, and some of the world’s most famous cyclists competed here, including Frank Kramer, Willie Honeman, Arthur A, Zimmerman and Alf Goullet. This heritage is still alive today, with the colorful annual Tour of Somerville.

Historian and journalist Michael C. Gabriele traces 130 years of cycling history in the Garden State, illuminating the people and events that shaped the sport.

"I downloaded the iMovie app to my iPhone at 6pm, then went for a walk & drive one town over in Nutley, NJ. By 8:30pm, I sat in Starbucks with this final video, in HD format, filmed and edited entirely on the iPhone. It's my first video edit on any format which is mind blowing that it can be done all on this tiny device by a complete amateur. (Song is "In The Park", Norbert Emminger Quartet, also selected from my iTunes library). "

VanRiper Street Fair - Sunday, Sept. 6

VanRiper Street Fair
Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009

• Proceeds Will Benefit Historic Restoration Effort

The "Van Riper Street Fair" is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 6.

The annual event is a fund-raiser for the on-going restoration work at the VanRiper House on River Road.

The historic house was built by John Bradbury shortly after he purchased the land in 1696. He lived in the house until his death in 1741. His widow continued to occupy the home thereafter. The home is one of the finest examples of early Dutch stone houses.

Work on the restoration project is being advanced by the volunteer members of the Van Riper Trust. Patti Williams, the group's president, says the annual Van Riper Street Fair is its major fundraiser.

Nutley Restaurant Week

Nutley Restaurant Week

Coming Mid-February!
"What's a Restaurant Week?

A traditional Restaurant Week, like those in NYC and Philadelphia, showcase a city's best restaurants by offering fine dining at an unbeatable price.
Participating restaurants will provide customers with a prixe-fixe menu that
generally consists of various three-course meals.

The Nutley Restaurant Week is a celebration of dining. It brings together a
community of our finest restaurants, and allows us to demonstrate the quality,
variety, and hospitality that makes Nutley restaurants so unique and popular.

Nutley's week will also try to promote healthier eating to help everyone start off the New Year right. Restaurants are asked to provide healthy alternatives to their normal menus without sacrificing the flavor you love. It's our way of adding a little twist to the traditional Restaurant Weeks!"

'Social Security' comedy night, Oct. 12

The Reader’s Theater group of Nutley Little Theatre will present a reading of “Social Security,” a comedy by Andrew Bergman, Sunday, Oct. 12, 4 p.m., at the NLT Barn, 47 Erie Place, Nutley.

Gerald Kirschbaum of Montclair will direct the production, which is free and open to the public. Reader’s Theater features actors reading scripts of new and established plays, supplementing NLT’s regular, fully staged performances.

“Social Security,” whose author is the screenwriter behind “Blazing Saddles” and “The In-Laws,” is about two adult daughters of widow Sophie — one being a sophisticated art gallery owner in Manhattan, and the other being an unassuming Long Island housewife. Sophie lives with the suburban daughter and her accountant husband, but a funny and unexpected crisis brings her to the city.

The cast includes Melissa Surow of West Orange, Anne Kenney Simpson of Bloomfield, Jim Simpson of Bloomfield, Patty Bradley of Belleville, Linda DeSimon of Bloomfield, Don Sheffrin of Little Falls and George Winship of Cedar Grove.

Nutley Little Theatre stages its productions at the NLT Barn, 47 Erie Place, Nutley, located off Brookfield Avenue (one block east of Franklin Avenue) in the heart of the Erie Place Historic District. For directions, visit www.nutleylittletheatre.com. For information about this or other productions, call 973-667-0374.

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT
As introduced.

A Joint Resolution designating the month of October of every year as Italian-American Heritage Month and repealing Joint Resolution No. 3, approved June 20, 1996.

Whereas, The history of America and the State of New Jersey have been significantly influenced by the rich heritage of Italy; and

Whereas, The cultural heritage of Italy includes the classical civilization of Rome, the fine arts of the Renaissance, the scientific and artistic genius of Leonardo Da Vinci, the literary works of Dante and Petrarch, the operas of Verdi and Puccini and many other contributions that have enriched civilization; and

Whereas, Over 5.4 million Italians emigrated to the United States between the years 1820 and 1991; and

Whereas, Over 1.5 million New Jerseyans or 18 percent of the State population are of Italian descent, according to the 2000 U.S. Census; and

Whereas, Italian-Americans have made many contributions to the history of the United States and New Jersey; and

Whereas, The voyages of the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus brought together the civilizations of Europe and the Americas; and

Whereas, Columbus’ first contact with the New World in 1492 is celebrated as a State and federal holiday every year in October; and

Whereas, It is altogether fitting and proper to designate a month honoring the significant accomplishments and contributions of the Italian-American community by designating the month of October annually as Italian-American Heritage Month; and

Whereas, It is appropriate to encourage American history classes in this State to highlight the contributions which Italian-Americans have made throughout American history; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

1. The month of October of every year is designated as Italian-American Heritage Month.

2. The Governor and Legislature of the State of New Jersey encourage American history classes throughout the State to discuss and examine the contributions which Italian-Americans have made to the history of this country during Italian-American Heritage Month and the people of this State are encouraged to observe the month with appropriate activities and programs.

3. Joint Resolution No. 3 of 1996 (C.36:2-39), approved June 20, 1996, is repealed.

4. This joint resolution shall take effect immediately.

STATEMENT

This joint resolution designates the month of October of every year as Italian-American Heritage Month. Joint Resolution No. 3 of 1996, which designated the week ending on October 12 of every year as Italian-American History and Heritage Week, is repealed.

You're From Old Nutley

I'm making a memory trip back to the Nutley area next week and would like to ask John Ryan if Nunzio's Music Store is still there-- and where. I took many years of accordion lessons there in the 50's and 60's. (Pain!).

Thanks,
Sue in Ohio
