'Social Security' comedy night, Oct. 12

The Reader’s Theater group of Nutley Little Theatre will present a reading of “Social Security,” a comedy by Andrew Bergman, Sunday, Oct. 12, 4 p.m., at the NLT Barn, 47 Erie Place, Nutley.

Gerald Kirschbaum of Montclair will direct the production, which is free and open to the public. Reader’s Theater features actors reading scripts of new and established plays, supplementing NLT’s regular, fully staged performances.

“Social Security,” whose author is the screenwriter behind “Blazing Saddles” and “The In-Laws,” is about two adult daughters of widow Sophie — one being a sophisticated art gallery owner in Manhattan, and the other being an unassuming Long Island housewife. Sophie lives with the suburban daughter and her accountant husband, but a funny and unexpected crisis brings her to the city.

The cast includes Melissa Surow of West Orange, Anne Kenney Simpson of Bloomfield, Jim Simpson of Bloomfield, Patty Bradley of Belleville, Linda DeSimon of Bloomfield, Don Sheffrin of Little Falls and George Winship of Cedar Grove.

Nutley Little Theatre stages its productions at the NLT Barn, 47 Erie Place, Nutley, located off Brookfield Avenue (one block east of Franklin Avenue) in the heart of the Erie Place Historic District.
