Local Sailor in Iraq

We received this note from a former high school classmate. So, if you want to write or send goodies to a sailor in the zone, here's one place to start.

Hi, Anthony:

Mike joined the Navy in April of 2006. His ship is the USS McClusky. He was deployed out to sea his first year for six months. This is the practice, each year out to sea for six months on different missions.

From what I understand sailors can go overseas on land as soldiers after training in the State of Washington on a volunteer basis, recommendation and approval of superiors. I believe only a couple of sailors per ship can actually go. Mike volunteered, and as much as his ship didn't want to part with him, did go to Washington to train this year and left for Iraq in late July. He will be there for a year. He just turned twenty one on July 13th.

We do talk from time to time via phone centers out there and sometimes on line when he is able. If you could believe it, he actually asked for Marlboro Light cigarettes - not my choice of what I would like to send him, but I did ask what he wanted. He also asked for pictures and letters.

Thanks again, Linda.
