NUTLEY LITTLE THEATRE TO PRESENT FREE ‘TWISTED YULETIDE’ DEC. 11, 2 P.M.

Nutley Little Theatre will present a holiday Readers' Theater revue titled, "A Twisted Yuletide Gathering" on Sunday, Dec. 11, 2 p.m. at the NLT Barn, 47 Erie Place, Nutley.

The free event will feature fractured Christmas and Hanukkah tunes, poems, plays and stories presented by a zany cast of Nutley Little Theatre stalwarts, including Stuart Aion of Caldwell; Vicky Chalk, Donna O'Donnell Figurski and Janis Wolfe of Nutley; Peter Helff of Paterson; Kathryn Osborne of Montclair; Joseph and Linda Ribaudo of Bloomfield; Don Sheffrin of Little Falls; and Linda Wielkotz of Fair Lawn.

Audience participation will be a part of the festivities and light refreshments will be served.

NLT’s Readers’ Theater Series is admission-free and open to the public. The Readers’ Theater Series features actors reading scripts of new and established plays, supplementing NLT’s regular, fully staged performances.

Mayor Cocchiola and the Board of Commissioners Set to Commemorate Veteran’s Day

Mayor Joanne Cocchiola and the Board of Commissioners, working in conjunction with the Nutley Veteran’s Council, would like to invite all residents to the Township of Nutley’s Annual Veteran’s Day ceremony to be held on Friday, November 11, 2011.

“Veteran’s Day is such an historic day for all American’s,” stated Mayor Joanne Cocchiola. “Our community is so grateful to all those who have served, and continue to serve, and I encourage all to come out and pay homage to them.”

The ceremony will take place at the World War II monument at the intersection of Booth Drive & Vincent Place, and will begin at 11:00 am. Pastor Kristin Engstrom, from Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, will lead the invocation and closing prayers, and the Nutley High School Chamber singers, under the direction of Mr. Michael Cundari, will be performing. This year’s keynote speaker is VFW Commander, Rich Porter. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the Veterans Council will conduct a formal flag disposal ceremony. All are invited and encouraged to attend.

November 11^th is the anniversary of the Armistice which was signed in 1918 ending World War I after four years of conflict.

The Nutley Veterans’ Council is a non-political, non partisan group made up of veterans’ from AMVETS Post 30, American Legion Post 70 and VFW Post 493, all of which are located in the township of Nutley. The Veterans’ Council is dedicated to fostering patriotism, serving the needs of veterans and supporting our community.

Lester has 16 years of library system experience — most recently as the director of the Nutley Library. She worked in the Maplewood system from 2007 to 2009 but was "a casualty of layoffs" during the 2009 municipal budget cuts.

The Fifth Biannual Nutley Hall of Fame will induct nine members on Sunday, Nov. 13.

They include Nutley High School graduate and U.S. Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg, and Dr. Angela Christiano, an associate professor of molecular dermatology at Columbia University who identified a gene for baldness.

The nine inductees:

• Cathleen Benko, a 1976 NHS graduate who distinguished herself in the global business world, and is currently a Deloitte LLP vice president and chief talent officer

• Larry Brancaccio, a champion motorcycle rider, life-long resident and 1975 NHS graduate

• Tina M. Cervasio, a 1992 NHS graduate and Emmy-nominated New York Knicks reporter on the MSG Network

• Christiano, a 1983 NHS graduate and associate professor at Columbia University who studies inherited skin and hair disorders

• Nutley native Lloyd Goodrich, director of the Whitney Museum of American Art, and an author and advocate of American art

• Lautenberg, the son of Polish and Russian immigrants who came to the United States through Ellis Island. A 1941 NHS graduate, he was a founder of the nation's first payroll system, Automatic Data Process, and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1982

• Earl Reeder, a Nutley resident from 1959 to 2003, an organic chemist at Hoffmann-La Roche for 33 years and the co-inventor of the tranquilizer Valium

• Linda Stamato, a 1958 NHS graduate and co-director of the Center for Negotiation and Conflict Resolution at Rutger's Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy

• Al C. Welenofsky, a Nutley resident since 1940 and 1955 NHS graduate; an adventurer, mountaineer and canoeist, who has canoed more than 11,027 miles, and has reached the highest point in 49 states, 11 countries and two continents

The induction ceremonies will open with a toast at 2 p.m. Following the formal program, NHS' culinary arts teacher and caterer Tarik Huggins will provide food for the reception. The event will take place at the Nutley Public Library on Booth Drive.

I remember one guy who got on at the next Nutley stop after mine, before Phyllis boarded. He was very quiet, he carried a thick briefcase, usually on his lap as soon as he sat down, like he was trying to take up as little space for himself as possible. The Office of Emergency Management anticipates remaining under a State of Emergency through 6PM Friday September 2, 2011.

As reported earlier there will be two special trash pickups for storm related debris Friday September 2 and Friday September 9, 2011.

Due to potential flooding on River Rd due to the Passaic River cresting (Expected at 8PM tonight), the sanitary sewer system may become compromised for a period of time. Should this happen we will be asking residents to refrain from using the sanitary sewers for a period of time (use of washing machines and dishwashers etc.). Residents East of Washington Ave are asked to refrain from using any water including toilets during this time to attempt to prevent backup of sewage into the homes .

Public Safety is advising residents to be aware of low hanging branches and wires and to stay clear of any downed wires. If we get flooding please do not drive through any standing or running water.

The Department of Parks is continuing tree and branch removal throughout the town and requests that any who sees a tree that appears compromised contact the Office of Emergency Management at 973-284-4936 during normal business hours and the Nutley Police Department at 973-284-4940 after hours to coordinate appropriate agency response.

Mayor Joanne Cocchiola and the Board of Commissioners announced plans for Nutley Township's Annual Memorial Day Parade at 11 a.m. Monday, May 30.

Weather permitting, a brief opening ceremony will be held in the Nutley Park Oval at 10:45 a.m., with the parade route being the same as previous years – Chestnut Street to Passaic Avenue to Centre Street to Franklin Avenue, with a reviewing stage in front of John H. Walker Middle School.

The keynote speaker is Raymond L. Zawacki, deputy commissioner of Veterans Affairs, and the grand marshal is Rich McClintick.

The morning of the parade will begin with visits to memorials:

May 2, 2011 - The Hillside Cafe's 4th Annual Beatles' "Sing-a-Long" is coming Saturday, May 21, with two performances, at 4 and 8 p.m.

Two robust sets of Beatles Songs—over 30 selections each – will be performed live with the lyrics projected so everyone can sing-a-long.

Leading the songfest will be Vicky Chalk on vocals, Jeff Little on base, John Wolf on vocals and guitar, and Paul Little of New York City on vocals, guitar and piano.

Proceeds this year will go to the Franklin Reformed Church in appreciation for providing the Hillside Café to use its auditorium throughout the year and for its continuing support of live music.

Cycling in New Jersey began in the 1880s, when colleges and communities formed some of the nation’s first cycling clubs, and the popularity of the sport quickly spread, with races held in Plainfield, Trenton and Asbury Park.

The region was also home to cycling’s golden era of velodromes, built in Newark and Nutley, and some of the world’s most famous cyclists competed here, including Frank Kramer, Willie Honeman, Arthur A, Zimmerman and Alf Goullet. Frank Stockton's last word on The Lady, or The Tiger?

APRIL 1, 2011 (NUTLEY, N.J.) -- The Nutley Library has recently revealed the discovery of an envelope left in its care more than 100 years ago by local author Frank R. Stockton, inside which the writer is said to reveal the end to one of his most famous and vexing short stories, "The Lady or The Tiger?"

The short story, published in 1882, is about a man sentenced to an unusual punishment for having a romance with a king's beloved daughter, according to Wikipedia.

Honored author Stockton, it was also explained, gained fame when his puzzle story, "The Lady or the Tiger?" became world famous and started a vogue in literature.

Written originally to amuse a group of friends, the narrative left its hero required to open one of two doors, behind one of which was a beautiful woman and behind the other a man-eating tiger.

Debates on the ultimate outcome raged all the way to India and similar stories appeared everywhere for years, although Stockton never did answer his question.

According to an outer envelope, the Nutley author left directions that the envelope be opened 109 years after his April 20, 1902, death, and that its contents will reveal the long sought ending as to whether or not it was the lady or the tiger - settling the controversy once and for all.

From about 1860 to about 1890, Frank Stockton lived with his family on Walnut Street in Nutley. The town at that time was home to many artists and editors, and was visited by Mark Twain who is said to have first tasted ice cream.

About this time he took a position on Hearth and Home, and in 1873 became associate editor of St. Nicholas.

"Rudder Grange" was at first a story which he wrote for Scribner's. Its cordial reception let him to enlarge it to the present delightful volume. This was the first book he wrote for "grown-ups," although the elders had long been reading his children's tales with delight.

In 1942, the Frank Stockton room, New Jersey's first library department exclusively for junior high school students was opened in the Nutley Public Library. A scene from his work "Rudder Grange" by Ivan Stoppe, a New York artist, is hung in the north end of the room.

"The Lady and the Tiger," written, so it has been said, for an evening party at Mr. Boardman's in Nutley, has been translated into many languages, and one day in India a group of Hindus were heard gravely discussing the probable fate of the hero.

Stockton came to Nutley because of his friendship for Mr. William H. Boardman, who is the boarder in "Rudder Grange."

The following is a description by Mrs. Stockton, the delightful Euphemia of his tales. "The first place in which we set up our household goods was at Nutley, N.J. Our dwelling there was a pretty little cottage where we had a garden, some chickens and a cow. This was our home during his editorial days, and here 'Rudder Grange' was written."

Here also he wrote a number of his other stories. One called "Our Archery Club" was written from experiences in the Nutley Archery Club. Stockton's archery equipment cost something like $103.10. When he took this story to the publishers he asked to a penny what his outfit had cost him, no more, no less.

Mr. Boardman recalled how on a certain Sunday morning he was awakened by hearing his name called. Looking out he saw Mr. Stockton crossing the street from his home carrying under his arm a black hen.

He proceeded to tell Mr. Boardman how they had broken the spare room washbowl and not caring to spend money for a new one, he offered this guaranteed setting-hen for a washbowl. A long dickering and discussion of terms followed resulting eventually in the transfer of the articles. Euphemia's elaborate chicken-raising may be remembered.

To the account in "Rudder Grange," it should be added that the Stocktons named their chickens after writers, and still called them by their names when they reached the table.

The principal works of Stockton are Rudder Grange, The Rudder Granges Abroad, The Lady or the Tiger, The Late Mrs. Null, The Casting Away of Mrs. Lecks and Mrs. Aleshine, The Dusantes, The Hundredth Man, Personally Conducted, The Merry Changer, The Squirrel Inn, The Watchman's Wife, Pomona's Travels.

Frank Stockton was inducted into the Nutley Hall of Fame in 2003, along with Annie Oakley and Martha Stewart.

As for the mysterious envelope purported to answer the long-asked question, current writer in residence, Anthony Buccino explains that he has been called upon by the library board and members of the Nutley Hall of Fame and given the honor to open the envelope, read the content and eat it, thus ensuring 100 more years of uncertainty.

Buccino's own take on the township mixes history, tales and observations in a rich mix of what may or may not be the true history of Annie Oakley, the ITT tower, Leni Lenape, a Valium breeze, not to mention the Velodrome and the headless rider or the parlous water that rage through town on rainy days.

Knowing some of Nutley's history, readers will appreciate the twists and turns and maybe even learn something about the quiet little "Norman Rockwell town" in northern New Jersey.

For instance, did you know that the quiet little river that runs through Nutley was called Yountakah by Lenni Lenape, and so was their annual autumn feast - a predecessor to the Pilgrims' Thanksgiving? The name was also used by a large country club and golf course that bordered the Passaic River in town.

Buccino's verse also tackles a few local customs, including the senior high grads swimming in pool across town, and the rite of crossing the perilous rail overpass at Memorial Park.

And, of course, Buccino would never write about Nutley without homage to the men who paid the price for our freedom. Four poems recall the men who died in service and the veterans who lived in town and made it what it is today.

In other nostalgic verse, Buccino recalls summers at Booth Park, ice skating at ITT tower, school air raid drills at Holy Family School, pieces of an airplane landing on a Nutley lawn one night, the Nutley Museum and the Nutley Little Theatre.

Buccino weaves his poem Wonderful Life around Frances Goodrich, who grew up in town and went on to write the “Thin Man” film series and later won a Pulitzer Prize for the play “The Diary of Anne Frank.”

Buccino’s poem suggests Goodrich’s screenplay for the popular Christmas film “It’s A Wonderful Life” has hints of old Nutley, and that the scene of the angel and George on the bridge may have been inspired by the Lyndhurst bridge over the Passaic River, not far from where Goodrich grew up.

In recalling Nutley of about 100 years ago, Buccino cites Guthrie’s Dry Good Store and some of our famous residents and visitors, including Mark Twain, Annie Oakley and Richard Stockton lining up for that new invention called ice cream.

Goodrich was inducted into the Nutley Hall of Fame in 2005. Buccino stood in for the writer and her family at the ceremony.

NHS Grads Walking From San Diego To Nutley
To Raise Fund for Breast Cancer Research, and other diseases

Some of you may or may not have heard that Anthony Greco and Rob Bonora (NHS Class of 2006/MSU Class of 2010) will be walking from San Diego back to Nutley in an effort to raise funds for breast cancer and childhood disease. They are also very interested in promoting wellness and our town has just been named a "NJ Healthy Town".

Rob and Anthony will begin their journey on June 1 and are expected to arrive back in Nutley in late September. They have been visiting schools and this effort has and will be promoted on a number of local and tri state news shows. You may know their parents, your children may have gone to school with them or you may have just heard of their efforts.

I believe they have already raised close to $20,000. We are organizing an event this Thursday evening at Midtown Bar and Grill, beginning at 7:30. This event is to help Anthony and Rob and to give them a sendoff from their family, friends and neighbors in Nutley.

We ask only that each attendee bring a gift/swipe card, in any denomination (VISA, AM EX, Target, Dunkin Donuts -- places that they will find along the way as they cross the county). They will be able to use the cards to purchase food, new walking shoes, and supplies for themselves. Lou Ritacco has generously offered to put out a light buffet for all attendees. Drinks and alcohol are not included and are the responsibility of the individual guest. If you are available, please come out and support them.

Active Servicemen and Women to Be Honored At Memorial Day Parade

Nutley, NJ – The Veteran’s Council and the Office of the Mayor would like to once again invite Nutley residents enrolled in the Armed Forces and their families to participate by marching in the Memorial Day Parade.

“It is such a nice way to pay tribute to these men and women, and to be sure that their selfless service to our country is always remembered,” commented Mayor Joanne Cocchiola. “This also gives our community members the perfect opportunity to thank them.”

Servicemen, servicewomen and their families are asked to contact the Mayor’s Office to confirm their participation. Names will also be collected for the Memorial Day Parade Commemorative Service Banner, which features names of community members who are actively serving in the Armed Forces.

There are currently 35 names of active servicemen and servicewomen on the banner, which is hanging on the Oval fence by Town Hall, off of Chestnut Street.

The Memorial Day Parade will take place on Monday, May 31st with opening ceremonies commencing at 11am in the Nutley Park Oval. This year’s parade will boast active marching bands, dance troops and army vehicles.

In addition, children and adults alike will be invited to participate in a patriotic bicycle parade. Bicycle parade information will be distributed through local public schools and pre-schools.

Jazz at the Nutley Museum' to feature singer/songwriter Melanie Mitrano

The next "Jazz at the Nutley Museum" concert, to feature singer/songwriter Melanie Mitrano, is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 20 at 8 p.m.

Mitrano, a lifelong Nutley resident, is an active performer and educator who maintains a local voice studio. Her latest album, "All Things Gold," was recently released on the Big Round Records label. It features original vocal jazz compositions, presented by some of the top jazz musicians in the New York area.

The museum will be open for perusal from 7:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in advance of the music set, scheduled to run from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Mitrano's trio includes guitarist Dave Rimelis and bassist Andy Eulau. They will present her original songs, as well as Brazilian jazz, sung in Portuguese.

The Nutley Museum is located at 65 Church St., Nutley. There will be a $15 charge at the door. Complimentary coffee and dessert will be served during the performance.

Nutley resident Anthony Buccino has published his third poetry collection AMERICAN BOY: Pushing Sixty. Working class verse about life and growing up in New Jersey.

From the center of the Baby Boom, his working class verse views life and growing up in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, and growing older in the 1980s, 1990s and the oughts.

Buccino will read from this and his other collections at the River Read Reading Series in Red Bank, N.J., on Sunday, Nov. 8. The afternoon also features reading by Susan Tepper, followed by an Open mic.

Buccino's poem Hands In Socks was named Editor’s Choice in the 2008 Allen Ginsberg Awards. His poem Ten Minutes earned Honorable Mention in the 2009 Allen Ginsberg Awards.

His poems have been published in Paterson Literary Review; Celebrating William Carlos Williams and The Poetry of Place: North Jersey in Poetry; Rattlesnake Review (Poetry With Fangs); Medusa’s Kitchen; Voices in Italian Americana; Edison Literary Review; Journal of New Jersey Poets; LIPS; CHEST, the Journal of the American College of Chest Physicians; The Idiom; MEWS; Raving Dove; More Sweet Lemons; The Poem Factory; and PowWow Review.

His first poetry chapbook, Days You Knew Me, was published in 1976.

A NYC financial news editor by day, Buccino nonetheless writes with humor on his many feature length blog posts on NJ.com, in essays and in poetry. He peruses every day with tongue firmly in cheek seeking the humor to pay homage. He has been called “New Jersey’s ‘Garrison Keillor’ ” or something to that effect.’

He has published three essay collections, three poetry collections and two military history books.

Francis Goodrich (1890-1984) was born in Belleville, moved to Nutley at the age of two and grew up in the large family home at 187 Nutley Avenue. It was a home where she would later marry Albert Hackett. The couple wrote dozens of plays and scripts for Hollywood films. The first play they competed together, “Up Pops the Devil,” was the first staged production of the Nutley Little Theatre on Nov. 23, 1934.

Francis and Albert became well know for their screenplays on the three “Thin Man” films staring Myrna Loy and William Powell, and on Frank Capra’s “It’s A Wonderful Life.” But Francis Goodrich and Albert Hackett’s crowning achievement came as playwrights on ”The Diary of Anne Frank” for which they won the Pulitzer Prize.

• Proceeds Will Benefit Historic Restoration Effort

The "Van Riper Street Fair" is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 6.

The annual event is a fund-raiser for the on-going restoration work at the VanRiper House on River Road.

The historic house was built by John Bradbury shortly after he purchased the land in 1696. He lived in the house until his death in 1741. His widow continued to occupy the home thereafter. The home is one of the finest examples of early Dutch stone houses.

Work on the restoration project is being advanced by the volunteer members of the Van Riper Trust. Patti Williams, the group's president, says the annual Van Riper Street Fair is its major fundraiser.

UPDATE: Grandpa took his ClaimYourGas.com forms and handed them to the owner of the Nutley Buick dealer saying the program is a rip-off, that he'd have to spend $100 a month to get back $25 each month for the next one and one-half years.

It's sure unlikely that Grandpa or anyone in his family will buy a Buick or General Motors vehicle of any kind from the Nutley Buick dealer. Ever.

Too bad this promotion ended on a downside. How can you promise an 80-plus year-old man $450 of gasoline and tell him he has to buy $1,800 worth of gas to get his loyalty gas credit.

The franchise owner insisted that his customers are clamoring to get into the ClaimYourGas.Scam program.

If you get to Washington Avenue in Nutley, N.J., you should stop in and ask them about the program. While you're there, kick a few tires.

What do you think of a car dealer that sends a loyal customer a key to try and win free gas? Sounds too good to be true. Perhaps car dealers are at the point where they'll do anything to get customers on the lot?

Well, Grandpa went to the local GM new car dealer and, lo and behold, he 'won' the $450 worth of free gas. But there was a catch. There always seems to be a catch in a gimmick like this.

Sorry, they said, they were all out of certificates, maybe he could come back tomorrow and get it?

Sure. He's retired. He went back the next day and got a CLAIMYOURGAS.com form to fill out:

"You have been selected to receive Gas vouchers from the gas station of your choice. Please be sure to visit our policy page at ClaimYourGas.com for complete instructions on how to redeem your Gas vouchers for gasoline gift cards."

So, he didn't really win $450 in gas for his car, he won "Gas vouchers" for gas for his car. At least it's "from the gas station of your choice." That's nice of them.

The form noted: "If you are mailing in your ClaimYourGas.com certificate, please be sure to include: Your ClaimYourGas.com certificate and $4.50 for shipping & handling if not registering online.

"In the event any of these items are not included, your redemption will be delayed."

So, since Grandpa is not PC literate, he turned to us for help to claim his $450.00 in free gas from the gas station of his choice. After all, why should he pay $4.50 to claim the $450.00 in free gas, when we could fill out the form online?

Whatever happened to NO PURCHASE NECESSARY? Maybe that only applies to visiting the dealer and trying your lucky key, not to actually redeeming your 'prize'.

Online comes the fine print. Grandpa doesn't actually get a voucher for $450.00 for free gas. He has to spend $100 at that brand gas station and submit the receipts each month. When the folks at ClaimYourGas.com get his original receipts for the month, they will send him a $25 gas card to use at that station.

So, for 18 months ( 18 x $25 = $450), Grandpa has to spend $100, or a total of $1,800 on gas and services for his car, in order to redeem the gas certificate.

Maybe when they thought of this sales gimmick and the local car dealer bought into it, gas was about $4.00 a gallon. At that rate, you could go through $100 a month in gas pretty quick.

But now that gas is less than half that a gallon, and people have continued to drive less, and eliminate unnecessary trips (like to the local car dealer), it could take longer than a month to accumulate $100 in receipts from your local gas station.

Not to mention, that nowadays, not all gas stations do service work on cars - so those receipts will be harder to come by, too.

I think the entire promotion, from the car dealer to the nitwits in Arizona who implement this program is a losing gimmick. You can be certain that they expect the submitted receipts to be lost in the mail, or that would be the fate of certificates sent to you. They probably expect most of the "winners" to miss some part of the puzzle in the year and a half - receipt collection and submission process.

How can a company require a "winner" to spend $1,800 over an 18-month period on gas and services to claim their prize? And also to have to submit original receipts each month to qualify for redemption?

Grandpa should get himself down to the local car dealer that awarded him this $450.00 free gas prize and tell them what a rip-off it is. He should give them a chance to hand him the $450.00 in cash in exchange for the confounded receipt-submission system, and then that would end it as long as he got the equivalent of his prize.

But, you know, that guy was so happy to win something - even if he doesn't know how twisted and unlikely it is that he will ever receive the actually prize - that we don't really want to spoil his bliss with the hard reality.

With prizes like this, we'd sooner never buy another car at that dealer. Grandpa, he bought his last two brand new cars there. We'd like him to wait and see how his $450.00 prize works out before considering another purchase there.

If you've fallen for this malarkey, click this link NJ Division of Consumer Affairs, we're sure they want to know the whole story from as many of you out there as have been duped.

If you're happy with your prize and the hoops you have to jump through to claim it, let them know that, too.

"What's a Restaurant Week?

A traditional Restaurant Week, like those in NYC and Philadelphia, showcase a city's best restaurants by offering fine dining at an unbeatable price.
Participating restaurants will provide customers with a prixe-fixe menu that
generally consists of various three-course meals.

The Nutley Restaurant Week is a celebration of dining. It brings together a
community of our finest restaurants, and allows us to demonstrate the quality,
variety, and hospitality that makes Nutley restaurants so unique and popular.

Nutley's week will also try to promote healthier eating to help everyone start off the New Year right. Restaurants are asked to provide healthy alternatives to their normal menus without sacrificing the flavor you love. It's our way of adding a little twist to the traditional Restaurant Weeks!"
