Natural Gas Underground Pipeline in Nutley

FERC is Seeking Comments on TRANSCO Gas Pipeline Environmental Assessment

August 9, 2012, “FERC has completed the Environmental Assessment of TRANSCO’s Request to Increase the pressure within the natural gas pipeline underground in Nutley.”

The staff of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has prepared an environmental assessment  for the Northeast Supply Link Project (Project) proposed by Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Company (Transco). Transco requests authorization to construct and operate certain pipeline and compressor facilities in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania in order to expand the natural gas delivery capacity to the northeast region of the United States.

FERC has concluded that approval of this Project would not constitute a major federal action significantly affecting the quality of the human environment.

FERC is now allowing public comment on this decision.  The Township of Nutley has cited potential impacts on home values and safety concerns associated with this proposal, which would traverse the township. Former Mayor Joanne Cocchiola and Commissioner Joseph Scarpelli coordinated the municipal response that resulted in The Township of Nutley passing and forwarding a Resolution opposing the Project.  In addition to the Resolution, a petition signed by 848 citizens citing similar concerns with the Project in general was filed with FERC.

The environmental assessment report has been placed in the public files of the FERC and is available for public viewing on the FERC’s website at www.ferc.govusing the eLibrary link. The report is available for viewing in the office of the Township Clerk or via the Township website www.nutleynj.org
“Any person wishing to comment on the environmental assessment may do so. Your comments should focus on the potential environmental effects, reasonable alternatives, and measures to avoid or lessen environmental impacts. The more specific your comments, the more useful they will be. To ensure that your comments are properly recorded and considered prior to a Commission decision on the proposal, it is important that the FERC receives your comments in Washington, DC on or before August 31, 2012.”  Instructions for filing comments can be found on the first pages of the document.
